Hey, how’s everyone’s week been? Is your revised self care plan in operation yet? I hope so!!
So, I feel like today we must talk about the Met Gala. {But read this quick before Getty Images take the post down 🤣}
Ahh yes The Met Gala. The big fancy, super-exclusive annual Hollywood fundraiser, that’s focused on arts and culture!
⭐️Pamela Anderson was ethereal in Oscar de la Renta.
✨Jodie Turner-Smith gave Lady Danberry vibes in abundance 💥Kris Jenner served quiet luxury in custom Oscar. ⚡️Anna Wintour glistened wearing Louis Vuitton
But here’s what’s bothering me: why weren’t they the headline?
Why did we instead get what felt like wall-to-wall mainstream media coverage of (mainly) younger stars - but barely a whisper about the women who shaped the very style codes these carpets are built on?
This isn’t about offering them a polite nod. It’s about recognising them as the moment. And it p’d me right orf that certain parts of the media couldn’t care less!
Women over 50 aren’t stepping back. They’re stepping into their power and rewriting the dress code while they’re at it. I love to see it, don’t you?!
The 2025 Met Gala Theme: “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style”
This year’s theme honoured the rich legacy of Black dandyism, style as defiance, as identity, as political sharpness. Thanks very much, Vogue for the history lesson.
Rooted in the Harlem Renaissance, it spotlighted how tailoring has been used by Black creatives to reclaim power and rewrite narratives.
Why It Matters
And if we’re serious about celebrating the craftsmanship and culture behind “Superfine,” then let’s not ignore the women who’ve lived that ethos, decade after decade.
Let’s give these women their flowers, not because they’re “still doing it.” But because they never stopped.
A Brief History of Being Stylish ‘At a Certain Age’
1950s: Women were expected to dress for their husbands.
1970s: The sexual revolution allowed some freedom, but still within ageist bounds.
1990s: Enter the “anti-aging” boom. The beauty industry cashed in on fear.
2020s: A shift. Grey hair campaigns. Older models on runways. Diversity finally including age.
And now? Women 50+ are skipping the apology phase and heading straight for the power suit - minus the 80s shoulder pads, of course😆
Did you know that women over 50…
…control more than half of global wealth, are the fastest-growing demographic on social platforms (both was creators and consumers)? And we know exactly what we want and will spend to get it.
We talk a lot about representation in fashion, but age is still one of the final frontiers.
And those talented women we saw (or didn’t!) see on the steps of the Met Gala this week. They’re not waiting for permission.
They’re setting the pace, owning the moment, and showing us that real style isn’t about trends, it’s about testimony.
Yes, many of these women are millionaires, meaning they can afford to look how they want, or have ‘their people’ call Louis Vuitton’s ‘people’ to secure that killer outfit.
But let’s be fair. They’ve worked hard for that privilege, and earned it.
However I reckon there’s still something we can still learn from them. About how we can and should carry ourselves with confidence - for all that we’ve been through in life, all that the nightmares we’ve navigated, everything that we’ve achieved and are achieving in life - personally and professionally.
My philosophy on life is Go out there, and live life to the full, regardless of what others may say about you. Go out there with your head up, even on the days you’re feeling like crap.
Remember that you’re doing the best you can, and the best is still yet to come.
What was your favourite look this year?
[Pro Tip: Best site I found to get a look at all the outfits was British Vogue]
Onwards and upwards.
Lots of love
